What is a Prosthodontist?

A Prosthodontist is a dentist who is specially trained in the replacement and restoration of missing teeth. Beyond dental school, a prosthodontist must attend 3 additional years of intensive training in complex restorative care. Dr. Matthews uses this training to create a state-of-the-art, natural looking, comfortable solution to your dental needs.

A dental implant simulates the form and function of a natural tooth root. It provides a stable foundation on which to place a replacement tooth or teeth. An implant is composed of titanium that allows the surrounding jaw bone to actually attach to the surface of the implant through a process called “osseointegration”. Because the implant is actually anchored in the bone, the overlying restoration has a solid feel and excellent retention.

There are a multitude of options for implant restorations depending on individual factors, such as tooth position, number of missing teeth, quality and quantity of remaining bone, etc. It is important to plan your implant restoration thoroughly before beginning this process, even before a tooth is removed, when possible.

Single Tooth Replacement

Allows replacement of an individual missing tooth without affecting the surrounding natural teeth. A single implant offers an excellent alternative to a conventional fixed bridge. 

Multiple Tooth Replacement

Multiple implants can be used to replace a span of missing teeth. They offer a fixed option as an alternative to a removable partial denture.

Full Arch Replacement

Implant Retained Dentures

Implements “snap” or “friction” features on dental implants to retain your replacement teeth. Provides greatly improved retention over conventional dentures with a minimum number of implants.

Implant Supported Dentures

Utilizes an implant retained, precision milled titanium bar to stabilize and support your replacement teeth. Offers the solid feel of fixed teeth, while allowing ease of access for hygiene and dental maintenance.

Fixed/Hybrid Denture

Provides a fixed/non-removable alternative to a conventional denture. Offers a solid feel that is as close to natural teeth as possible.

Computer Aided Design

Computer aided design has become an integral part of many dental implant procedures. Computer technology is combined with a CT Scan to plan the precise placement of your dental implants based on the desired final tooth arrangement. Teeth-in-an-Hour, Teeth-in-a-Day, and All-on-4 are examples of concepts that allow you to have a fixed (non-removable) alternative to a conventional denture placed the same day as implant placement.

 

What is the difference between implant retained and conventional dentures?

Implant retained dentures attach to implants (small posts) which have been placed into your bone. The implants provide stability for your dentures making them feel snug and secure.

Conventional dentures and removable partial dentures use the shape, contour, ridge, and suction of your mouth to provide stability of your denture.
